Carolina Gold was once the most popular rice in America and the country’s first commercial rice, exported to France, England, and Asia. By 1820, it was grown on 100,000 acres across the South, shaping the plantation culture and economies of South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina. The great wealth Carolina Gold produced its growers was built on the tortured backs of slavery. The success only made things worse increasing demand for slaves from the Rice Coast of Western Africa.
